动物、植物和自然等主题始终贯穿于你的创作。你为什么对这些特别感兴趣?

大小岛真木

因为离开它们我们无法生存,人类是生物,也是自然的一部分。事实上,我们的供氧一半来自森林,另一半则来自海洋中的蜉蝣生物。

Subjects such as animals, plants and nature have been a constant theme in your works. Why are you so interested in this theme?

Maki Ohkojima

Because we can’t survive without them. And we, human being are also part of the creature. We are part of nature. Actually, Half of our oxygen is produced by plankton in the ocean, the other half is made by the forest.

你的创作思想是否有受到日本神道 (将世间万物中令人敬畏及崇拜的均视为神) 的影响?

大小岛真木 

碳,氧,氢,氮,钙,磷,钾-星球和作为生物的我们都是由相同的元素构成的。基于我们的思想,万物有灵。

Is your creative philosophy somehow influenced by Japanese Shinto thoughts (all things are spiritual)?

Maki Ohkojima

Carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, potassium ― Stars and we creatures are made of the same atoms. Animism sprits we have in based of our thought.

2017年,在受邀参与塔拉号太平洋科考的艺术家驻留项目后,你将创作的关注点延伸到了海洋。可以跟我们分享一下你在塔拉号驻留期间的经历吗?

大小岛真木

塔拉号是个大家庭,所有成员一起工作、用餐、交谈、分享故事,共享空间。这是个很棒的经历,开拓了我的眼界!

After being invited to the Tara Pacific artist residency in 2017, your interest for creation reached out to the domain of ocean. Would you like to share your stay on Tara the artists’ residency?

Maki Ohkojima

Tara it’s a family, all the members work together, share the space, eat meal together, talk together, share the stories in the same boat. It’s a great experience. It has expanded my horizon!

塔拉号的经历对你的作品和创作过程有着怎样的影响?

虽然我之前就很清楚自然界的循环,但这段经历让我切实的感受到海洋和陆地的联系。

How the experience on the Tara affects the process and work of your creation?

Maki Ohkojima

I got realization to connect ocean and ground in real feeling. Sure I have known the circulation of nature from before.

自塔拉号的驻留后,鲸鱼就成为了你创作中非常重要的一个主题。是什么让你对鲸鱼如此着迷?


大小岛真木

鲸鱼是靠捕食蜉蝣生物为生的巨型生物。一只鲸鱼死后,它的身体在深海中化作供各种海洋生物存活的新生态体系,所谓“鲸鱼落,万物生”。

Since your stay on Tara, the whale has become an important theme in your creation.

What do you find in whales that fascinates you?


Maki Ohkojima

Whales are big creatures and eat a lot of planktons but when they die, their bodies go down and whale give rise to new ecosystems in the sea. “Various marine life gathers when Whale fall.”

可以给我们具体讲讲让你对鲸鱼感兴趣的经历吗?

2017年2月6日,我遇见了一只鲸鱼。但她已经死了,许多鸟正在啄食她的残骸。鲨鱼们也都聚了过来。皮肤渐渐化开,白色的脂肪漂浮在海上。而她则随着海浪的节奏上下浮动。

Would you like to share your story when you started getting interested in whales?

Maki Ohkojima

On February 6, 2017, I met a whale. 

However she is not alive, a lot of birds came to eat her bodies. Sharks were also gathered.

The skin was melting, white of fat was drifting on the sea.

Leave herself on the rhythm of the wave.

鲸鱼形象背后的符号学内涵是什么?你希望从鲸鱼的视角讲述怎样的故事或者传递怎样的信息?

有多少生命在海洋中消解?

这是我们赖以生存的生命基石。

地球就像一个巨型生物。

What is the semiotic connotation behind the whale image? What message or story do you hope to convey from the whale's perspective?

How much life is melting inside sea?

The place where we live by the cornerstone of life.

The earth seems to be one big creature.

目前你的一件大型鲸鱼主题作品正在杜梦堂展出。这件作品是什么时候完成的?花了多久?

大小岛真木

这是我参加塔拉号驻留后完成的第一件鲸鱼。当时我满脑子都是关于海洋的生命循环,所以我想以这件作品来展开。在塔拉号期间我也有很多创作的思路。

这件作品花了我很多时间,包括在驻留期间的构思。

Q

You are exhibiting a large whale - themed work at Galerie Dumonteil. When did you finish this work and how long did it take? 

Maki Ohkojima

This whale is the first whale after TARA. After expedition inside me full of circulation from the sea. So I wanted to start it, during TARA also I imagine many creation. 

This work I need took time including TARA expedition.

鲸鱼的鱼鳍被珊瑚所覆盖,而它的头部和身体都布满了星云的图案,这展现了你自身的宇宙观吗?

大小岛真木

其实鲸鱼上的细节是大量的蜉蝣生物,以及几组DNA序列,在DNA序列的中间是各种矿物质的形状,细胞与宇宙相融。我想呈现一个由各种事物组成、源自地球和宇宙的生物。

Q

he fin of the whale is covered with coral reefs, while its tail bone and body are decorated with stars, does it stand for your own inner view of the universe?

Maki Ohkojima

Actually, inside detail of whale, those are many planktons make a line of DNA, inside DNA have the mineral shapes, and cell are mix to the universe.

I would like to present that creature originate from various things on the earth and the universe.

所以我们可否把这只鲸鱼理解成海洋集体记忆的一个缩影?

大小岛真木

是的,这是一个关于鲸鱼的系列作品,我目前总共创作了8只鲸鱼,每只鲸鱼都有一个故事,从宏观和微观的角度书写关于地球的集体记忆和历史回忆。

So could this individual whale be understood as a microcosm of the collective memory of the ocean?

Maki Ohkojima

Yes, I have created around 8 whales. It’s whale series. each whale have each story. It’s cosmos and microcosm of the collective memory of earth. Also historical memories.

你最近在做什么?可否跟我们讲讲你未来的计划?

目前我的作品正在“2019濑户内三年展”展出。在这个地方,哲学的土壤和海洋在此交汇。“我们从土壤中诞生,然后回到土壤中”,“大海,生命之羹”

鲸鱼向我展示了她生命的循环,而我则想象着她的身体。她的骨架成为了许多生物的家园,而对人类而言,骨架是存储矿物质的生命支撑体系,好比身体中一个固态的海洋。

铁元素——组成我们血红细胞的重要元素贮藏在地球的核心,血液好比是地壳岩浆的再生体。而化石燃料则是古生代几千亿年前的动植物化石。我想象着人类的生命从物理意义上与地球形态变化的种种重叠。

What are you working on recently? Can you share some of your future projects with us?

Maki Ohkojima

Now I participates in the Setouchi Triennale 2019.

In this place philosophy ground and sea are crossing in there. “we born from soil, and we return to soil”, “ Sea, soup of life” 


Whale showed me her circulation. And I imagine her bodies. Her bone became like house of many creature. And for human, Bone is a life support device storing minerals, It is a solid sea in the body.

Iron stored in the central core of the earth-making up our red blood cells. Blood is the regeneration of magma.

Fossil fuels, fossils of animals and plants of Paleozoic・hundreds ~ tens of millions years ago.

I imagine the human’s life overlapping the physical sense on the phenomenon of morphological change of the earth.

My creation is always spiral form, it will be again in my life.

大小岛真木(Maki Ohkojima)1987年出生于日本东京,2011年毕业于女子美术大学。大小岛是一名跨学科艺术家,擅长通过绘画、壁画和影像作品表达自己。


Born in Tokyo in 1987, Maki Ohkojima was graduated from Joshibi University of Art and Design in 2011.  Ohkojima is a multidisciplinary artist expressing herself through painting, mural and video.


她的作品着眼于一切实体与精神之间的联系,例如人类、环境、动物与灵魂之间的联系和生命循环。她试图通过自己的内心世界来分享其它事物的视角——鸟、森林、细菌、矿物或是苏醒的猴子们,并从这些视角中获取这个世界的故事。


Her work focuses on the lifecycle and connection between humans, the environment, animals, and spirit – the grand connection of everything physical and energetic. She strives to share the views of many creatures—birds, forest, germs, minerals or monkeys awakening— onto her own inner world and draw the tale of the world from these views. 


东京森美术馆策展人片冈真实(Mami Kataoka)认为,大小岛的作品反映了“延续至今的前现代技术、大胆的古代神话、萨满教和宗教仪式在多元文化环境下”的影响。


According to Mami Kataoka, curator at the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, Ohkojima’s works reflect the influence of “premodern techniques, daring on ancient mythology, shamanism, and ritual that is carried on today in diverse cultural areas around the world”. 


2017年大小岛受邀登上从关岛驶向横滨的塔拉科考船进行为期一个半月的旅行。这段独特的经历为艺术家提供了“进一步了解气候变化和水中世界的机会。所有的海洋、森林、生物之间息息相关,而人类只是宇宙更大循环中的一部分”。大小岛作品的侧重点也从先前的森林生命周期转移到了海洋——“陆地与海洋本就相互联系”。


In 2017 Ohkojima was invited to join the Tara schooner for a residency onboard of one month and a half from Guam to Yokohama. This experience was a unique opportunity to “to know more about climate change and what is happening in the water. All of the ocean, the forest, the creatures – they are all connected and humans are just a part of the larger circulation of the universe”. Her previous work focuses on the life cycle of the forest and now she is moving her focus from land to the ocean – “since it is all connected”.
